Researchers exploring the Cyclops Mountains of
Papua (the western half of the island of New Guinea) have reported finding burrows, tracks, and other signs indicating the continued existence of an egg-laying mammal not seen since 1961. In fact, the animal had been collected exactly once, and is represented by a single specimen in a Netherlands museum. Scientists from the Zoological Society of London will return to
Papua next year in hopes of photographing
Zaglossus attenboroughi in the wild.
